In revealing Cassandra's interior life, Rozema lays bare the modern female condition in an epic battle that is by turns lacerating, soothing and heartbreaking.
A thoughtful interrogation of modern womanhood, leavened by gallows humor.
A film that brandishes the messiness of self-doubt and self-contradiction, but uses that morass of emotions to unearth something very pertinent about the lives women live, and the lives they leave behind.
MOUTHPIECE is belied by its generous interest in milquetoast interpersonal conflict over the internal turmoil of a woman constantly arguing with herself.
At once a piece of rage and anger, fear and bereavement, love and affection, that is not only one of the best play-to-film adaptations I've seen, but a cinematic punch to the gut and simultaneous grip on the heart.
Like the ideal version of their mother these sisters carry in their heads, there's a better version of Mouthpiece that was never uncovered.
Rozema's version of the award-winning stage play does more than just open the work up; it fills in key bits of information, shows us Cassandra out and about in Toronto and gives everything an affecting emotional resonance.
A moving, warm film that neither pulls its punches nor revels in misanthropy, MOUTHPIECE is an exceptional work, one that feels very much a perfect vehicle for the best of Rozema's craft and proclivities.
Rozema wields style and restraint, preserving the play's conceptual wit as Cassandra takes calls, shops for the funeral, and battles with herself while composing an honest and loving eulogy for her mother.
