Robin Hood (2018)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Robin Hood robs from rich source material, but is ultimately just another poor attempt to needlessly gussy up a classic tale with amped-up action and modern special effects.

While it plays fast and loose with loaded political iconography, this Robin Hood has brought a whole new dimension to this age-old tale.

Hey ... it's almost as if they're stealing our money and selling it right back to us by way of another thoughtless capitalistic Robin Hood remount.

Several dueling shades of dull, this umpteenth retooling of the outlaw legend is desperate to convince viewers that Christopher Nolan had something to do with it (he didn't).

It's legitimately funny. Not sure that was the intention.

You could build a suspension bridge over the gap between what Robin Hood could have been and what it is.

Arriving just in time to win a place among the year's worst films, Robin Hood robs you of two hours. Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx go down the gullet of this toxic Thanksgiving turkey that definitely does not deserve a pardon.

Audience Reviews for Robin Hood

Robin Hood has been dumbed down to an action packed CGI fuelled film that borrows heavily from every successful action franchise you can think of. There's a bit of Fast and Furious, Star Wars, Marvel Superhero, Lord of the Rings. Just imagine a combination of Hawkeye and Legolas, and some "diversity" to make it palatable for the modern audience. Forgettable, and despite the charm of Taron Egerton, this is an epic fail.

The fact that Robin Hood 2018 was a trashy, pointless movie-of-the-week that disappeared quickly from multiplexes surprised no one. What is surprising is just how forgettable it is. If you were expecting a memorably terrible howler for the ages along the lines of Jupiter Ascending or The Book of Henry, you'd be mistaken. This will probably go down as the weakest outing of this English folklore/public domain character. I generally like most versions of Sir Robin of Loxley. Whether it was the legendary Errol Flynn version, the sloppy but entertaining one with Kevin Costner, the forgotten and downbeat Sean Connery outing, the Disney animated adventure, the whimsical farce Men in Tights, or the pretty okay "Robin Hood Begins" flick from Ridley Scott and Russel Crowe. Some of those are outright despised and I enjoy them all regardless. That's a pretty low bar to clear. And this movie fails that standard. Much like 2017's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, it opts for an anachronistic urban retelling, with some broad messaging of modern economic inequality. While King Arthur was also pretty shit, it had Guy Ritchie's direction which put a fair amount of energy into the movie, and some entertaining fantasy elements. Robin Hood 2018 is fairly boring, bizarre how on-the-nose its modern choices are, and it leans dangerously close in trying to copy elements from The Dark Knight trilogy. There are a few elements that work. Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx have an entertaining buddy cop dynamic that would have been better served in a modern action movie. And yes, while Egerton and Eve Hewson have chemistry, their love story seriously drags the picture down. There are TONS of action sequences in this movie, and only a couple of them adequate. It's shocking that hundreds of millions of dollars went into this movie, for it to look so cheap. There was little to no reason for this movie to exist, and its upsetting that a better retelling of this story has been passed up TWICE - a dark script called "Nottingham." That story has a sympathetic Sheriff of Nottingham trying to solve a series of gruesome murders by the roadsides winding through Sherwood Forrest. And depending on which angle the director and studio wanted to take, Loxley was being framed for the murders by his aristocratic rivals OR Robin the Hood would be a PTSD soldier from the Crusades leading a group of murderous highwaymen, hellbent on bleeding Plantagenet England dry. Wouldn't you rather see THAT film? Thought so. Needless to say, Robin Hood 2018 misses the mark so widely it will probably be decades before we see this character again.

Marred by its attempt to modernize the tale aesthetically, Robin is more miss than hit and deprives from some good performances from Egerton, Foxx and Mendelsohn. 1.5/5
