The Cry: Season 1 Reviews

This could prove interesting, but I'm afraid the whole thing is just a bit too grim for me.

Whether the rest of the drama, quite matches up to the intensity of this provocative proposition is moot.

It's horribly manipulative and stagey, and Jenna Coleman is woefully miscast.

There's a mother, a crying baby, and something. The something is out of reach, because of the jumbled logic and the sense of an unreliable narrator at work.

The final installment took a big risk in being so slow, but all the storytelling effort paid off in a piece that called to mind one of those Hollywood melodramas where the dames had the last word.

It is thanks to her that [Jenna Coleman] is such bruising, engaging viewing.

This is not a story that stands up to close scrutiny, but what seemed to be yet another abducted-child drama with Madeleine McCann undertones has, eventually, turned into a richer mystery altogether.

Subtle, nuanced, a psychological thriller that built suspense while tapping in to the worst parental nightmare.

The Cry is an intelligent psychological thriller that will focus and refocus your suspicions and loyalties, all the while evocatively demonstrating the shifting power dynamics.

Buckle up, it's going to be grim.

There is an element of mumsploitation to The Cry...Yet it also asks questions about what happens to the "wrong" kind of mother, the "wrong" kind of woman.

If you're able to stomach a nightmare scenario that not even the blazing Australian sunshine can brighten, there is a compelling commentary on the perils of parenting at the dark heart of The Cry.

As the media circus ensues, it's the mechanics I'm interested in, not the characters.

Jenna Coleman magnificent as ever... It's brilliantly watchable: the time-loops might niggle, but only serve to elucidate. I think The Cry is even better than Bodyguard.
November 8, 2018
The versatile Jenna Coleman (Victoria, Doctor Who) is quite moving, and unnervingly enigmatic, in a four-part BBC drama.
November 9, 2018
The first episode is a packed 55 minutes, which bodes well for the rest of the miniseries.

Coleman's Joanna is alternately grieving or glassy-eyed and then yet utterly poised as a woman finding her peace - or winning retribution. She is matched by Leslie, who mines humanity in a selfish man.
